Slice of the City- Ward 3

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and the City Council invite Somerville community members to the inaugural "Slice of the City" meet-up series. This new series of family-friendly pizza parties in the parks offers attendees a new way to connect and engage with city leaders and staff as well as neighbors all while enjoying Somerville’s parks.

The outdoor series for all ages will feature seven early evening meet-ups, from 5 to 7 p.m., throughout the month of May – one each in each of the city’s seven wards. Held in parks and green spaces, the drop-in style gatherings are an opportunity to mingle with Mayor Ballantyne, your Ward and At-Large City Councilors, School Committee members, and State Delegation representatives, as well as City staff and neighbors. Meanwhile, the Recreation Department will host kid’s activities, and refreshments and pizza will be provided.

"Not everyone can squeeze a whole weeknight community meeting into their schedules, and others may be hesitant to join a more formal event, so it’s important that we try out new ways  for people to connect with the public servants who serve them,” said Mayor Ballantyne. “We are excited to launch the 'Slice of the City' series as part of our ongoing commitment to creating access to local government and building community. Plus it’s always great to have a reason to hang out in our awesome parks."

Staff on hand will be happy to discuss neighborhood projects, City programs and services, questions or concerns, or your favorite pizza topping.

PorchFest 2024

Save the date!

PorchFest Somerville 2024 will take place on Sat. May 11th (raindate the 12th).

In 2011, the Council created a decentralized music festival--Porchfest.  Perhaps you’ve sat on your porch and overheard a neighbor strumming guitar on another porch?  Porchfest takes this idea and multiplies it. This is not a festival per se but rather a community event where Somervillians share their love of playing and listening to music.  Think of Somerville Open Studios, which is for visual artists, but for music.

Similar to prior years, to ensure guests can move orderly through the city and view the music, porches located West (west of Willow) will perform during the slot from 12-2; Central (from Willow to Central) from 2-4; East (east of Central) from 4-6.

Picture + Panel: Mental Health with Cara Bean + Jonell Joshua

This month, Picture + Panel opens up a profound and compassionate conversation about mental health between Cara Bean and Jonell Joshua. Graphic Medicine advocate Matthew Noe will moderate.

About the Creators
Cara Bean is the author of Here I Am, I Am Me: An Illustrated Guide to Mental Health and Draw 500 Funny Faces and Features. She provides interactive workshops on creativity with people of all ages and backgrounds in various public forums. Cara is passionate about drawing and believes that the simple act of doodling on paper can lead to the investigation of complex ideas. When she is not teaching, she makes comics that delve into poetic self introspection, playful storytelling and topics relevant to teens and teaching. Cara is currently working on comics projects that speak directly to kids and address mental health. Cara lives in Massachusetts with her husband and their dog Raisin.

Jonell Joshua found her calling for art at a young age -- precisely 2nd grade -- after she found her mother's art portfolio in the bedroom of her childhood home. Hoping to emulate her mother's talents, soon after, Jonell started drawing kid’s portraits in the cafeteria during lunch. In later years she dove deeper into the arts, continuing to create in and out of school, finding ways to express herself and connect with others.

Today Jonell is an award-winning illustrator based in Brooklyn, New York. Her professional work has explored a range of topics in editorial illustration and publication, including illustrating for Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Real Life Tales of Black Girl Magic, The Queens of the Resistance series, and work featured in the film Selah and the Spades. She has worked with clients including The New York Times, The Washington Post, New York Magazine, and NPR.

Bolly Fusion Dance

Bollywood Fusion is the overarching term for dancing to music in any South Asian language, but is most associated with soundtracks from Hindi cinema. It showcases traditional folk and classical Indian dance forms, and explores how they have evolved over time, at times incorporating flair from other styles such as jazz and hip hop.

Class entails a brief warm up, followed by learning choreography. Music ranges from classic Bollywood to modern, upbeat Hindi and Punjabi songs – but inspiration can take us anywhere! You’ll explore where Indian folk meets other global styles, emphasizing hand movements, footwork and facial expressions. Classes may emphasize springy footwork and bold arms inspired by Bhangra, or swift hand movements and soulful expressions inspired by Kathak or Bharatanatyam. Any combination of these elements is possible!

Everyone and all levels are welcome! Come learn something new in a fun, judgement free zone and leave feeling energized!
